India is an amalgamation of different and varied states with different cultures supporting them. Among them is God’s own country, better known as Kerala. So come and discover the mysteries that make this state a special one and also take back memories that enthrall your senses.

Kerala has been acclaimed of its potential in generating millions of tourists every year. The well planned and strategically located state at the south-western tip of India has unique geographic features that have made it one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Asia.

As we know this state is better known as God’s own country and any visitor who goes there once will definitely want to go back again and again to find solace in the breathtaking beautiful greenery surrounding it.

Natural endowments like serene blue beaches, soothing backwaters and lagoons, exhilarating hill stations, enchanting waterfalls and fresh water springs, historic monuments like temples and palaces, spectacular dance forms, rejuvenating health packages, exotic wildlife and year-round festivals.

And last but not the least when we think of Kerala we think of the most educated people. The state takes pride in having the most advanced society in the country.

It has a hundred per cent literacy rate, the lowest infant mortality rate  and the highest life expectancy rate. What attracts a traveler to the state of Kerala is the pristine environment with greenery all around, rich and vibrant culture and high quality of life of the local inhabitants.

Backwaters & Houseboats

Further inland when one goes into the interiors of this state there are more and endless miles of placid Kerala backwaters, flanked on either side by a towering palm tress. These meandering waterways are around the cities of Alappuzha, Kottayam, Kollam and Kochi. These waterways or better known as backwaters are best traveled in thatched roof houseboats called “kettuvallam” or in a sleek darting local snake boat.

The houseboats have all the comforts and amenities of a luxury hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Something that is magical and mystical about a ride in the houseboat is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers and also it helps to experience the culture and tradition that the locales of that region follow. These houseboats provide the same kind of luxury that a modern hotel provides and they have an extra edge over these hotels because of the natural ambience.

The houseboat or the “Kettuvallam” or 'boat with knots'- was so called because the entire boat was held together with coir knots only made from the tough fiber of the coconut husk - not even a single nail is used during the construction. The boat is made of planks of jack-wood joined together with coir. This is then coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels.

A portion of the Kettuvallom is covered with bamboo and coir to serve as a restroom and kitchen for the crew. Meals would be cooked on board and supplemented with fresh fish from the backwaters that are caught by the fishermen of those areas. Today, the tradition is still continued and often the food from the local cuisine is served on board. Relax in style, in the beautifully furnished living room as cool breeze wafts in through the awning.
